DCB U-17 50-Over Championship
East Coast Demerara and West Demerara recorded contrasting wins as action in the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) U-17 50-Over Championship bowled off at the Everest Cricket Club Ground over the weekend.
On Monday, the East Coast Cricket Board (ECCB) thrashed the Upper Demerara Cricket Association (UDCA) by 190 runs.
Batting first, East Coast posted 219-8, thanks to standout performances from Vikash Wilkinson (47), Arun Gainda (39), and Yannick Newton (22). They then returned to skittle UDCA for a paltry 29 inside 20 overs.
Saif Ragbeer (2-5), Gainda (2-2), and Marcel Nandu (2-1) were the architects of UDCA’s demise. Despite being on the losing side, Marvin Forde was impressive for UDCA with the ball, returning figures of 4-23.
Meanwhile, on Sunday at the same venue, West Demerara managed to sneak past the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) by two wickets. Batting first, GCA posted a paltry 100 all-out in 34.4 overs. National youth-player Shamar Apple (38), Dave Mohabir (18*), and Emmanuel Lewis (12) were the primary scorers for GCA.
Patrice Fraser (2-17) and Yudesh Seetaram (2-24) were the standouts with the ball for West Demerara, while three other bowlers, including opener Parmeshwar Ram, snared one wicket apiece.
On the other hand, West Demerara’s chase was set up by opener Arvind Suknanan, who delivered a patient 45 with just one four off 124 deliveries. Meanwhile, Ram hit two fours in his 17 while Seetaram contributed 11 to the cause.
Despite GCA’s inspired bowling performance, which almost pulled off a memorable win, the West Demerara tail-enders contrived to carry their team over the finish line.
Bowling for GCA, Lewis (2-16), spinner Stephon Sankar (2-13), Dhanesh Persaud (2-19), Jayden Dowlin (1-10), and skipper Mohabir (1-9) almost turned the tide for their side.
