Dear Editor,
The swift and proactive measures taken by the Guyana Government to bring relief to victims of Hurricane Beryl is commendable. So far three persons have been reportedly killed. Hurricane Beryl has again brought to the fore the importance of climate mitigation measures especially against the background of rising sea levels and extreme weather patterns caused by global warming.
Storms in the Caribbean are not uncommon but it is the intensity and destructive capacity of these storms that are worrying. Hurricane Beryl has already broken several records both for intensity and timing. It is the first Category 5 hurricane ever recorded for this time of the year. One can only pray for the safety of the people along the path of the storm, which has already wreaked havoc on St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and St. Lucia.
Sincerely,
Hydar Ally
