A 65-year-old manager of Toucan Distributors Limited was robbed of $10 million on Wednesday night by two men dressed in police uniforms and armed with pistols.
Police say they are investigating the robbery committed on the 65-year-old manager of Toucan Distributors Limited, which occurred at about 9.50 on Wednesday night at the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) compound on Young Street in Kingston, Georgetown.
According to police, the suspects are said to be two identifiable males fully dressed in police blue and black uniforms, both armed with pistols.
Enquiries revealed that the victim left work at about 9.15 pm in a black Toyota Land Cruiser, PKK 3700, with five GBTI bags containing the cash. When he arrived at the bank, he met with Telbert Grant, a security guard on duty, attached to GEB security firm. The security guard opened the gate and allowed the 65-year-old access to the deposit site, which is located on the southern side of the bank.
As the man proceeded to the deposit area, he observ-ed two motorcyclists approaching from behind his vehicle and became concerned. However, he concluded that the motorcyclists were ‘policemen’ since they were dressed in police uniform. As the man walked towards the deposit vault with the money bags in hand, one of the suspects approached him from behind, pulled out a firearm and pointed it at his head. The suspect then grabbed the bags from his hand, joined the other motorcyclist, and escaped from the bank’s compound.
Detectives are in the process of reviewing CCTV footage, as investigations continue.
While the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) initial press release stated that the suspects were wearing ski masks, the owner of Toucan industries refuted the statement. The owner told reporters that in their statement to the police, there was no mention of the suspects wearing ski masks.
Public Relations Officer of the GPF, Mark Ramotar, told reporters last evening that the lead detective noted that initially, while mention was made of the suspects wearing ski masks, as the investigation continued, it was confirmed that the suspects were not wearing masks.
No arrest has been made thus far.
