Trinidad: Granny charged with husband’s murder

(Trinidad Express) Ste Madeleine grandmother Michelle Balgobin has been charged with the murder of her husband and remanded in prison.

The 53-year-old woman appeared in court on Wednesday charged with killing her husband during a domestic dispute at the family’s home in Stanleyville on June 24.

That night, the mother of five and grandmother of six was detained by police at the hospital where her husband Gary Balgobin was taken after he was stabbed in his chest.

He died while being treated by doctors.

Balgobin was in police custody at the Gasparillo Police Station for four days then released last Friday pending further enquiries into the investigation.

Police rearrested her on Tuesday following instructions from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to the Homicide Bureau of Region Three to charge her with murder.

She appeared before Master Goswami in the San Fernando Magistrates Court yesterday and remanded in prison until the next hearing on November 1.

Her son, Terrance, 29, told the Express last week that he had hoped his mother would be released from custody to attend his father’s funeral.

However, a senior detective of the Homicide Bureau of Region Three told the Express that the accused woman would not be allowed a concession to be brought from Remand Yard to attend the funeral to be held at the Balgobin family’s home today at 9 a.m.

Following the funeral service, the body is to go to the Shore of Peace at Mosquito Creek in South Oropouche.
