Arjoon, Verwey capture Mixed Doubles crown

– Guyana off to solid start in team event

The combination of Avery Arjoon and Nicholas Verwey propelled Guyana to mixed doubles glory when the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Championships continued in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. The duo of Arjoon and Verwey, who also captured gold in the girl’s U-15 singles and boy’s U-19 singles, respectively, bested the Barbadian pair of Sarrayah Yearwood and Dominic Wilson in straight sets 11-9, 11-6.

Meanwhile, Guyana got their team campaign off to a solid start yesterday in the team tournament, following a record of three wins and a draw in the boy’s and girl’s sections, respectively.

In the boy’s pool, Guyana thrashed Jamaica 5-1. Michael Alphonso brushed aside Brady Holmes 11-5, 11-5, and 11-8 in the U-19 matchup, while Mohryan Baksh made light work of Max Henzell 11-1, 11-2, and 11-1 in the second match in the section.

Shiloh Asregado thumped Cole Brown 11-1, 11-2, and 11-1 in the U-17 fixture, with Egan Bulkan dispatching Rhys James 11-1, 11-1, 11-2 in the U-13 fixture, and Zion Hickerson thrashing Jaden Emery 11-4, 11-2, 11-0 in the U-11 encounter. Guyana’s only blemish occurred after Justin Goberdan lost to Ethan Miller 9-11, 14-12, 12-14, and 5-11 in the U-15 fixture.

In their second match, Guyana blanked the Cayman Islands 6-0. Alphonso dismantled Xavier Marshall 11-2, 11-2, and 11-1 in the U-19 fixture, while Asregado defeated Charlie Makin in the U-17 encounter 11-8, 11-4, 11-6, and Goberdan overcame Levi Jack 13-11, 6-11, 11-8, and 11-9 in the U-17 matchup.

Bulkan then defeated Jonty Rodgers 11-6, 13-11, and 11-8 in the U-13 fixture, while Zion Hickerson made light work of Yion Chambers 11-5, 11-6, and 11-2 in the U-11 encounter, and Baksh downed Brodey McComb 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, and 11-1 in the U-19 fixture.

In the girl’s team section, Guyana defeated the Cayman Islands 4-2. Arjoon downed Milanna Lamontagne 11-6, 12-10, and 11-7 in the U-17 matchup. However, Zoey McDonald went down to Kaylee Pierre 4-11, 2-11, and 3-11 in the U-13 fixture, while Alexis Arjoon was bested by Sienna Scarpa in the U-11 fixture 7-11, 10-12, and 8-11.

However, the trio of Safirah Sumner, Malia Maikoo, and Kaylee Lowe received walkover victories to secure the result.

Meanwhile, Guyana then played to a 3-3 stalemate with Trinidad and Tobago. Sumner defeated Sigourney Williams 11-2, 11-5, 10-12, and 11-7 in the U-19 fixture, while Emily Fung-A-Fat bested Lilee Lum Kim in the same division 11-3, 11-5, and 11-2. Avery Arjoon dismissed Mya Francois in the U-17 encounter 11-2, 11-3, and 11-2. However, Lowe lost to Josie Thong 8-11, 13-15, and 9-11 in the U-15 fixture, with McDonald falling to Aaniyah Ramdeen 5-11, 14-16, and 12-14 in the U-13 match, and Tehani Munroe losing to Gia Ghuran 9-11, 7-11, and 4-11 in the U-11 fixture.
