The Jaguars got off to a winning start as they defeated the Hawks by 24 runs when the Zeelandia Sports Club (ZSC) U-16 30-overs Cricket Championship commenced in Wakenaam.
The Jaguars opted to bat first and managed 96 all-out in 13 overs at the ZSC ground. Jonathan Barry top scored with 27; Jumal Whyte made 15; and Aarav Sukhram made 13. Leonardo Lewis bagged 5-10, while Kevon Lewis snared 2-17 and Justin Dowlin tallied 2-26.
In reply, the Hawks unit was bowled out for 72 in 15.3 overs. Jeremiah Melville made 20, Kevon Lewis made 17, and Nathan Persaud made 16. Barry, who bowls left arm orthodox spin, grabbed 4-16, off-spinner Sukhram recorded 2-14, and leg-spinner Bomesh Lall registered 2-16.
Meanwhile, at the opening ceremony of the tournament, Chairman of the Zeelandia Sports Club, Tulchan Pooran, urged the players to make full use of the opportunity and touched on the importance of discipline.
The competition is being sponsored by former members of Zeelandia Sports Club and former residents of Zeelandia village, and it is being sanctioned by the Wakenaam Cricket Committee.
