…as West Dem Guinness Greatest of the Streets kicks off

The West Bank/East Bank Demerara Zone of the Guinness Greatest of the Streets street ball competition got off to a fiery start last night at the Pouderoyen Tarmac, West Bank Demerara.

Home team Pouderoyen Brothers nailed ‘Up Like 7’ 5-1 in the opening encounter to get their campaign off to a near perfect start.

In the very first minute of the game, eventual hat-trick hero Dklayne Peters opened the Brothers’ account while Luiroy Nieuelder (6th minute) and Seon Stephen (13th minute) opened a 3-0 gap in the first half in a dominant display from the Pouderoyen side.

Epic Touch Family (right) controlled their game against Bagotstown Warriors from start to finish to end 6-2 winners.

The second half saw `Up Like 7’ claw one back through a well taken Sebestian Edward strike in the 17th minute. However, that would be the only goal action for them as Peters cashed in with a Guinness Goal (any goal in the final 3 minutes of the game counts as 2) to complete his hat-trick and solidify Pouderoyen’s dominant win.  The second game of the night saw much of the same as Epic Touch Family (ETF) romped to a thoroughly one-sided win over Bagotstown Warriors.

They recorded one of the fastest goals of the

tournament so far, as Devin Gaskin completed a sweeping team move, tapping in from close range in just 30 seconds to put ETF in front.

Donte McAulay (6th minute) and Shaquille Dos Santos (7th minute) then made it 3-0 to ETF.

Trevon Connell (17th minute) made it 4-0 early in the second half before Gaskin completed his hat-trick with consecutive strikes in the 23rd and 24th minutes respectively to cap an excellent individual display.

The Warriors had some respite when they were awarded a penalty in the dying minutes of the game. Bobb Junor held his nerve to slot home the penalty which counted as a Guinness Goal to bring some sort of respectability to the scoreline. The game ended at 6-2.

Up to press time, six games were yet to be played.

The winners of the Zone will pocket $400,000 and an automatic berth in the National Playoffs.
