Chris Gonsalves, a 23-year-old labourer was arrested by police on mobile patrol in Berbice yesterday for the possession of 11.5 pounds of marijuana.
A police press release stated that ranks were on mobile patrol at around 07:45 hrs yesterday in the vicinity of First Street, Islington Village, East Bank Berbice, when they observed a man walking along the street near the sea wall, acting suspiciously.
Ranks approached the man, who identified himself as Chris Gonsalves of West Canje Berbice, the release said. A search was carried out on his person and the immediate surroundings, during which police found a bulky parcel over the sea wall containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems of cannabis, it added.
The release said Gonsalves was told of the offence committed and cautioned, after which he told police: “Sir, is a ‘fine hussle’ I doing, is about ten pounds, give me a chance.” He was arrested and taken to Central Police Station along with the cannabis. At the station, the cannabis was photographed and weighed in Gonsalves’ presence, and it amounted to 11.5 pounds, the release said.
Gonsalves was placed in custody. He is slated to be charged, it added.
