The woman, whose body was found in Diamond, East Bank Demerara with a gunshot wound to the back of her head on Sunday, was today identified as Evelyn Alfonzo Alves also known as Fabianna Bentancourt, a 23-year-old unemployed mother of three of East Street, Georgetown.
Alves, who is a Venezuelan of Guyanese parentage, was last seen on Saturday evening by her mother, Juliet Alves, and it was hours later the horrific discovery of her body bearing the gunshot wound was made.
According to the police, the woman’s body was found by workers from a construction company who were in two vehicles on their way to refuel the company’s excavator. The discovery was made on the roadway in the New Diamond Development Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.
At the time of her death, Alves resided with her mother and her three children, two boys and a girl.
Speaking to Stabroek News, Juliet Alves, related that the last time she saw her daughter was on Saturday night when she left their East Street home in a white taxi that she normally travels in. The woman told her mother she was on her way to pick up some money at a hotel.
The mother related she never heard from her daughter again but later received a text from one of her daughter’s friends informing her that her daughter’s body might have been found at Diamond. She later identified her child’s body. She disclosed that her daughter’s purse wasn’t found but her cellular phone was on the scene. She is pleading for any kind of assistance for the children as their mother was the sole breadwinner of the household.
At the time of the discovery, Alves was clad in a white jersey with the image of a female on the front, black jeans, and a pair of black pumps. A tattoo of a butterfly was seen on the right arm. Her head was in a pool of blood.
Detectives processed the scene on Sunday morning and a 9mm spent shell was found about ten feet away from the woman’s head. A cell phone was found next to the body. The body was examined and what appeared to be a gunshot wound was seen at the back of her head.
The body was escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home where it was later identified and is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
