Mocha Village Football Cup

A new champion will be crowned in the sixth edition of the Mocha Village Cup ‘Soft Shoe’ Football Championship, as defending champion Hardball was sent packing in the round of 16 section, losing to Stabroek Ballers on penalty kicks on Saturday night at the community centre tarmac.

Stabroek Ballers earned their place in the quarterfinal section after overcoming Hardball 3-1 on penalty kicks after regulation and extra time failed to separate the two teams at 2-2. Prior to the eventual conclusion, Jamal Cozier recorded a brace for the Stabroek Ballers.

Meanwhile, Red Force and Team Family also secured their berths in the quarterfinal segment following contrasting wins.

Red Force squeaked past the Victoria Eagles 2-0 on penalty kicks after normal and extra time ended 1-1. Prior to the eventual conclusion, Sceyon Hope gave Red Force the initial lead in the 15th minute, only for Victoria to equalise in the form of Alden Lawrence in the 16th minute.

On the other hand, Team Family brushed aside Slugs 3-1. S. Jones gave Family the perfect start as he opened the scoring in the first minute. The lead proved to be short-lived as N. Tappin etched his name on the scorer’s sheet three minutes later to

restore parity to proceedings.

However, S. Jones restored Family’s one-goal advantage as he completed his brace with an 11th-minute conversion. S. Jones then sealed his hat-trick to secure the win, as he found the back of the net in the 18th minute.

The tournament resumes at the same venue on Wednesday with another round of elimination fixtures. The winner of the event will pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third, and fourth-place finishers will walk away with $200,000, $100,000, and $50,000 and the corresponding accolade.
