Guyana continued its successful run in the CWI Rising Stars U-19 Women’s T20 Championship with a close 5-run win over Barbados in a low-scoring encounter yesterday at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago.

After winning the toss, Guyana’s skipper, Realanna Grimmond, elected to bat. By the time Barbados had skittled the Guyanese for 57 runs in 17.2 overs, the prospect of a win looked bleak for Grimmond and her teammates.

Erin Dean led the dismantling for Barbados, picking up a stunning 4-5 (2.2 overs), with only Tilleya Maramootoo (12), Grimmond (8), and Laurene Williams (7) making any sort of score past 5.

Dean was well supported by Nia Wood, who took 2-8 (4 overs).

With just 57 to defend, the Guyanese bowlers stood up to bowl their hearts out in a successful defence of what was a paltry target.

Danielle Manns, for the second game in a row, had a standout performance, claiming 3-13 from 4 overs.

So potent was the Guyanese bowling effort that none of the top three batswomen for Barbados got off the mark, as they all were dismissed for ducks. In fact, only Elicia Bowman (15) and Wood (12) made any contribution, with extras (11) helping the Barbadians narrow the deficit.

Crystal Durant (2-6), Tremaine Marks (2-11), and Niya Latchman (2-13) all made telling contributions with the ball as Barbados was bowled out for 52 in 17.1 overs.

The next round of the tournament, slated for tomorrow, will see the Guyanese attempt to make it four consecutive wins when they face the Leeward Islands at the Diego Martin Complex in Diego Martin, Trinidad.
