Cumberland man left homeless after suspected arson

A fire suspected to be arson completely destroyed a two-storey concrete and wooden house during the wee hours of yesterday at Cumberland Village, East Canje Berbice leaving a man homeless.

Jamaludeen Mohamed, also known as “Mickey”, 48, had occupied the fully furnished two storey premises for over five years now. According to him, the building belonged to his overseas-based cousin who had also sent two tractors to Guyana which were stored under the house. Both were completely destroyed by the fire.

The man yesterday told Stabroek News that he was at work when he received a call around 2.30 am on Monday from a neighbour informing him that his entire building was on fire.

“The fire service really fail me. I hurry come and we calling and calling and be time them meet the whole house done burn down and all the man tractor them and so.”

Meanwhile, Mohamed said that based on information provided to him a person  who had threatened to burn his premises down was seen on the road prior to the fire.

“We had a fight, he did run in here and we had problem and he tell me on Saturday that he gonna burn the house down with me inside.”

As of yesterday afternoon, police had not confirmed whether any one was incustody in connection to the fire.

Mohamed estimated his losses to be over $18m which includes the two tractors.
