Fifty-five-year-old Ingrid Thomas of Brittania, West Coast Berbice, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where she was charged with attempting to supply prohibited articles to a prisoner.

It was alleged that on July 8, at Lot 46 Brickdam Stabroek, Georgetown, without lawful authority, Thomas entered the Brickdam prison with a SIM card hidden in a toothpaste tube.

Thomas pled guilty to the charge.

When asked to explain herself, she stated that she placed it into the toothpaste to send for her son, Bevon Thomas, a convicted prisoner, and when asked if she knows that SIM cards were prohibited she stated “yes.” The magistrate further questioned if she knew that toothpaste was allowed and she responded “yes,”. When asked if she was forced to do it, she asserted, “I did it on my own free will.”

After this exchange, Magistrate McGusty sentenced Thomas to 30 days’ imprisonment instead of the full sentence given that she did not waste the court’s time and was forthright.
