Gun discharged following serious accident near aquatic centre

Police are investigating a serious accident which occurred on Monday at about 10.46 pm on the Railway Embankment road in the vicinity of the Aquatic Centre and the discharging of a gun by someone connected to the injured person.

The police yesterday said that the accident involved motorcar #PAD 7667, owned and driven by Samuel Blackman, a 22-year-old from Non-Pariel, East Coast Demerara, and motorcycle #CK 3289, owned and ridden by Quacy McCalmon, a 31-year-old from Norton Street, Lodge.

According to Blackman,  he was proceeding west on the Railway Embankment road, and while in the vicinity of the Aquatic Centre, he made a U-turn and felt an impact on the front of his vehicle.

When he looked, he saw the motorcyclist on the ground, bleeding.

Blackman further told investigators that a minibus arrived shortly after with persons suspected to be relatives of the motorcyclist. He then heard a loud explosion (believed to be a gunshot) coming from one of the persons who arrived with the minibus.

A security guard in the area told investigators he saw one of the persons who arrived in the minibus discharging a round in the air as they picked up the injured motorcyclist and drove off with him.

Investigators photographed and processed the scene and found one 9mm spent shell.

McCalmon is at the GPHC receiving medical attention for his injuries.  Blackman is in custody. Police are trying to ascertain who discharged the firearm at the scene as investigations continue.
