Raheem Benn, 29, of Lot 23 Meadow Brook Housing Scheme, Georgetown, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with armed robbery.
It was alleged that on June 13, at Forshaw Street, Georgetown, while armed with a knife, he robbed Dominque Cassin of one Apple IPhone 11, valued $150,000.
Benn plead not guilty to the charge.
In the matter of bail, the prosecutor objected to its granting citing the seriousness of the offence, He informed the magistrate that the phone was retrieved from the accused at the scene, and that the police had secured statements from eyewitnesses.
The court also heard that Benn was arraigned on July 8, before Magistrate Judy Latchman for similar charges and also before Magistrate Alisha George for an unlawful possession of ammunition charge.
During his hearing before Magistrate McGusty, Benn was constantly disrupting the court with his outbursts, repeating, “I want a hearing.” He then broke down in tears claiming he was shot in his back by police on the night in question as he was heading home from a party. However, the prosecution told the court that when the police approached the defendant, he was attacked them, prompting them to shoot.
Benn was remanded to prison and the matter was adjourned to July 23 for report and statements.
