Zeelugt woman in custody after attempting to kill child with ‘chopper’ – police

A mother of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, was arrested by police on Monday, after she chopped her 9-year-old daughter in an attempt to kill her.

Police are investigating the attempted murder of a 9-year-old girl from Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, which occurred at about 22.00 hours on Thursday.

Enquiries disclosed that the 9-year-old girl and her mother live together in Zeelugt with her mother’s boyfriend. The child’s father died about four years ago. At about 22.00 hours on Thursday, the woman and her boyfriend got into a heated argument, during which, the boyfriend told her that he did not want them anymore. He then left the house.

The woman then called her daughter and told her that her father was already dead and her stepfather (boyfriend) did not want them. She then took a ‘chopper’ [cleaver] and chopped her daughter on the left arm in an attempt to kill her.  The child managed to escape and was rescued by a neighbour who took her to the Leonora Cottage Hospital.

The child was examined and her condition was listed as stable. She was later transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where she was admitted.

The mother was contacted at her home by the police and was observed to have a chop wound to her left arm. She told investigators that she had cut herself. She was subsequently arrested and escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where she was examined and her condition deemed stable. She was later discharged and taken to the Leonora Police Station and placed in custody, where she is assisting with the investigation.
