As part of its efforts to raise the standard of education across Guyana, the Ministry of Education (MoE) announced plans for its Secondary Sector to intensify its oversight of the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) curriculum.
And according to a MoE release yesterday, this includes the meticulous monitoring of Sixth Form secondary schools, “to stimulate academic advancement and refine teaching methodologies.”
To assist in this endeavour, MoE recently hosted a comprehensive CAPE workshop from July 9 to 11, at Queen’s College in Georgetown and included educators and administrators specializing in five key subjects: Caribbean Studies, Communication Studies, Integrated Mathematics, Physics, and Pure Mathematics.
According to the release, the workshop’s agenda was “meticulously crafted” to address critical facets of CAPE education. Areas of discussion focussed on were: 1) curriculum insights – deep dives into syllabus content and its practical implementation. 2) Challenges and Solutions – identifying obstacles faced by educators and students alike, accompanied by effective resolutions. 3) Best Practices – showcasing successful strategies employed in teaching and learning. 4) Internal Assessment Standards – detailed guidelines on selecting topics, marking criteria, and the seamless integration of assessments within the curriculum. 5) Feedback and Moderation – techniques for providing constructive feedback to students, alongside ensuring accurate submission and moderation processes.
The release noted that the primary thrust of the workshop was to refine teaching methods and optimise student performance across CAPE examinations. It did so by leveraging the expertise of seasoned educators coupled with the MoE’s strategic guidance, thus enabling participants to gain invaluable insight into improving instructional quality and fostering an enriched learning environment.
Further, the workshop facilitated a comprehensive assessment of school readiness for both internal assessments and external moderation procedures. This evaluation, it explained, ensures adherence to rigorous academic standards set by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), enhancing overall educational integrity.
Out of this exercise, the MoE anticipates elevated academic achievements among students, enhanced teaching methodologies, and streamlined administrative processes within participating schools. It also assured of its commitment to nurturing a generation of well-prepared and academically proficient individuals through continuous professional development and strategic educational initiatives.
“As the Ministry of Education continues to refine its approach towards educational excellence, workshops like these serve as pivotal platforms for ongoing collaboration and knowledge exchange among educators, ultimately shaping a brighter future for Guyana’s secondary education landscape,” the release added.
