Corriverton taxi driver busted with close to $35m marijuana

A Corriverton taxi driver was on Wednesday evening busted along the Corentyne highway with his motorcar heavily packed with packages of cannabis which amounted to close to $35m worth.

Police yesterday said, that an intelligence-led operation by ranks from Regional Police Division 6 and Police Headquarters on the Number 45 Public Road, Berbice, resulted in the interception of a silver grey Toyota Spacio bearing registration number HD 732.

The motor vehicle was at the time being driven by a 33-year-old taxi driver of Block 19 Line Path, Corriverton, Berbice. “A search was conducted on the said motor vehicle, which led to the seizure of seven salt bags containing a total of 53 brick-like parcels wrapped in transparent plastic suspected to be Cannabis Sativa.”

The driver who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was taken into custody. The parcels were weighed and amounted to 116,641 grams (257 lbs) which has a street value of $34,992,383.
