CWI Rising Stars Men’s U-19 2-Day
Guyana got off to a horror start in the CWI Rising Stars Men’s U-19 2-day tournament in St Vincent & the Grenadines, as Leeward Islands medium pacer Nathan Edward ripped through their batting order to help bowl out the Guyanese for a paltry 111 on day one at the Park Hill Playing Field.
After his skipper, Jewel Andrew, won the toss and sent the Guyanese in to bat, Edward’s opening over was near perfection as he snapped up two quick wickets to leave Guyana on the back foot.
On the third ball of the opening over, Edward bowled opener Romeo Deonarine for a first-ball duck. While that brought Guyana’s skipper, Mavindra Dindyal, to the crease, his stay wouldn’t be long as he too was cleaned up by Edward on the final ball of the over after hitting a four.
Guyana further slumped from 7/2 to 11/3 by the end of the second over as Sachin Balgobin went for a first-ball duck, caught off the bowling of Michael Palmer.
The collapse did not stop there as Edward snapped up his third, bowling Alvin Mohabir for a five-ball duck. At 14/4 in three overs, the prospects looked bleak for the Guyanese, and only a brief partnership of 30 between Rampersaud Ramnauth (22 from 23 balls) and Jonathan Van Lange (28) dragged their team back to some semblance of respectability.
However, Ramnauth was the next to go, leaving the side at 44/5. Van Lange soldiered on, striking up another 39-run partnership with Shahid Viera (16), but his departure with the team on 83 spelled the beginning of the end.
While Van Lange fell out caught off the bowling of Matthew Miller in the 21st over, Viera would depart in the very next one, stumped off Micah McKenzie, leaving Guyana at 83/8.
Thaddeus Lovell (16 from 14 balls) played a handy knock but got out while Riyad Latiff (10 not out, 35 balls) tried to shepherd the tail to carry his side to a decent total. However, McKenzie and Edward had other plans, as the former accounted for Isai Thorne (2) while Edward fittingly bowled last man Gulcharran Chulai to complete his five-wicket haul.
Edward returned excellent figures of 5-21 (4.2 overs), while McKenzie (2-18, 10 overs) and Miller (2-23, 5 overs) all pitched in to help bowl Guyana out for 111 in 34.2 overs.
In response, by the end of the day’s play, the Leeward Islands batsmen were in firm control at 84/2 (20 overs), backing up the earlier good work from their bowlers.
While Lovell struck early to remove Brent Joseph (5), Devenand Singh (22 not out), Michael Palmer (24) and skipper Andrew (16 not out) played sensible cricket to usher their side to the close of play within 27 runs of Guyana’s first innings total with 8 wickets in hand to boot.
Lovell had figures of 1-34 (8 overs), while Thorne, who accounted for Palmer, has 1-16 from 4 overs. Play resumes today from 10:00am at the same venue.
