Six-year-old Jeremiah Gustave who was wounded in the head as a result of a shooting at Charles Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, on Tuesday night, remains hospitalised in a critical condition.
Keisha Gustave told Stabroek News last evening that her son underwent surgery on Thursday and was placed on a life support machine. Since the incident, Jeremiah has been unresponsive and his condition is still listed as critical.
Regional 4 ‘A’ Commander, Assistant Commissioner Simon McBean, told Stabroek News that the police investigation is ongoing and the suspects are yet to be arrested.
Jeremiah resides with his mother, Keisha, a 39-year-old food vendor at 11 Charles Street, Charlestown who plies her trade in front of the house.
Investigations have so far revealed that on Tuesday night, Jeremiah was standing next to his mother on the eastern side of Charles Street when the suspect approached on a black motorcycle with a gun in his hand.
As he approached the woman’s food stall, he discharged four rounds in the direction of a man known as ‘Crab’, who was standing not far from the child and his mother. ‘Crab’ then began to run and managed to escape, however, Jeremiah was shot and fell to the ground.
The boy was picked up by his mother and rushed to a city hospital, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment.
The police have so far recovered two 9mm spent shells from the scene and are on the lookout for the suspect, as well as the man known as ‘Crab’.
“I thought the thing was squibs, not knowing it was a shooting out. When I turned, I saw that my son was already in a pool of blood. Then I rushed him to the hospital,” the mother said.
