A Corriverton taxi driver who was this week busted along the Corentyne highway with his motorcar filled with packages of cannabis which amounted to close to $35m worth was yesterday jailed for three years and eight months and fined after he pled guilty to possession of narcotics.
Naasik Alli, 33, of Lot 1&2 Number 75 Village Corentyne, Berbice, appeared at the Albion Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with possession of 257.15 pounds of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Alli who appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy yesterday pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to three years, eight months in prison and was fined $104, 977, 620.
Police had said that an intelligence-led operation by ranks from Regional Police Division 6 and Police Headquarters on the Number 45 Public Road, Berbice on Wednesday evening resulted in the interception of a silver-grey Toyota Spacio bearing registration number HD 732.
The motor vehicle was at the time being driven by Ali. “A search was conducted on the said motor vehicle, which led to the seizure of seven salt bags containing a total of fifty-three brick-like parcels wrapped in transparent plastic suspected to be Cannabis Sativa.”
The driver who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was taken into custody. The parcels were weighed and amounted to 257 lbs which has a street value of $34,992,383.
