Hinckson, Austin strike gold in Peru

South American U-20 Athletics Championship

The Guyanese duo of sprinter Athaleyha Hinckson and quarter mile specialist Malachi Austin breezed to gold medals in their respective events, the girl’s 100m and boy’s 400m respectively, at the South American U-20 Championships in Lima, Peru.

Additionally, Tianna Springer, another of Guyana’s star athletes, copped a bronze medal in the women’s 400m. The 16-year-old Hinckson powered her way to the gold in the 100m running 11.76s to finish comfortably ahead of Brazil’s Hakelly De Souza Maximiano (12.02s) and Stefany Julio (12.04s).

Austin, on the other hand, continued his sublime form in the boys 400m, completely outclassing the opposition in a winning time of 47.21s. Ecuador’s Ian Reasco (47.69s) had to settle for silver, with Brazil’s Vinicius Galen (48.29s) taking the last podium spot for bronze.

Springer, meanwhile, clocked 55.12s for her bronze in the women’s 400m, coming in behind Brazilian Julia Robeiro (54.32s) and Colombian Nahomy Castro (54.87s). The South American U20 Championships will conclude today.
