Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum yesterday said a main suspect has been identified in the  murder of Venezuelan, Evelyn Alfonzo Alves and a completed file on the investigation is expected to be sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

The body of Alves, also known as Fabianna Bentancourt, a 23-year-old unemployed mother of three of East Street, Georgetown, was found with a bullet to the head on July 7 the road at Diamond, East Bank Demerara.

Alves’s aunt, Patricia Alphonso told Stabroek News yesterday that based on the surveillance camera she saw at the hotel, Alves and her friend came out of the hotel on the night and a taxi driver who drove a black car picked her niece up. She confirmed that the same taxi driver, who is the prime suspect, was arrested for questioning by the police and is presently in custody.   The aunt is currently requesting any financial help she can get to help with the family with funeral arrangements for Alves.

Alves, who is a Venezuelan of Guyanese parentage, was last seen in the evening of July 6 by her mother, Juliet Alves, and it was hours later that the horrific discovery of her body bearing the gunshot wound was made.

According to police, the woman’s body was found by workers from a construction company who were on their way to refuel the company’s excavator. The discovery was made on the roadway in the New Diamond Development Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.

At the time of her death, Alves resided with her mother and her three children, two boys and a girl.

Speaking with the Stabroek News, Juliet Alves related that the last time she saw her daughter was on Saturday night when she left their East Street home in a white taxi that she normally travels in. The woman told her mother she was on her way to pick up some money at a hotel.
