CWI Rising Stars U19 Men’s 2-Day

Guyana’s Men’s U19 team scratched their way to a draw in a low-scoring encounter against the Windward Islands in the ongoing Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars Men’s U19 2-day competition in St Vincent.

Following another abysmal batting performance in their first innings on Sunday which saw the Guyanese being bowled out for 142, the Windward Islands started yesterday 33 runs adrift of Guyana’s total with six wickets in hand.

However, they, too, suffered a meltdown, bowled out in the morning session for 172, with a slender lead of 30.

Leading the fightback with the ball for Guyana was pacer Isai Thorne and spinner Golcharran Chulai who accounted for seven wickets between them.

Chulai took the important wicket of top scorer Devonie Joseph (30) and was responsible for the demise of the middle order of the Windward Islands batting.

Chulai had Tarrique Edward (10), Lee John (11) and Kirsten Murray (11) all caught to return figures of 4/54 (19 overs) while Thorne comprehensively bowled Aaron Joseph (18) ending the Windwards’ innings. He had figures of 3/24 (13.2 overs) in a commendable performance.

Batting for a second time, the Guyanese lads were even more abysmal, as Kirsten Murray and John rocked their batting line up, bowling them out for just 111 in 55.2 overs. Thaddeus Lovell, a lower order batsman,, rescued the Guyanese who were stuttering on 24/5 in the 15th over of their second innings.

He formed a 43-run partnership with Riyad Latiff before getting out for an aggressive 34-ball 36, during which he clobbered five fours and a maximum in a display of counterattacking batting.

Latiff on the other hand, played a marathon 72 balls for 11 runs, in an effort to occupy the crease and shepherd the Guyanese tailenders and innings to a respectable total. However, his was the last wicket to fall, giving the Windward Islands a total of 82 for an outright victory. Murray ended with figures of 3/16 (6.2 overs) while John captured 3/30 (18 overs). They were ably supported by Tarrique Edward and Kirt Murray who took two wickets each.

In search of 82 to win, time was against the Windward Islands and they could only get to 25/3 from 11 overs.

Thorne again was impressive, striking with his first ball to remove opener and skipper Stephen Pascal for a duck. He also had first innings topscorer Devonie Joseph out caught for 6 while Chulai had Theo Edward caught by Mohabir for 12.

The Guyanese will now turn their attention to their next match, against Barbados at the Arnos Vale ground in Kingstown, St Vincent.
