Mocha Village Cup Football
Red Force and Stabroek Ballers will contest the final in the 6th edition of the Mocha Village Cup ‘Soft Shoe’ Football Championship on Saturday evening following hard-fought semifinal wins at the community centre ground.
Red Force downed Family 3-1. Sceyon Hope broke the deadlock in favour of Red Force via a third-minute conversion. However, Shamar Jones restored parity to proceedings as he found the back of the net in the 10th minute.
The score remained unchanged until the 25th minute, when Hope secured his double to restore Red Force’s initial one-goal advantage. The contest was then sealed in the 30th minute, as Kelvin Gordon netted.
Similarly, the Stabroek Ballers overcame the Ballerz Empire 5-3. A fifth conversion from Jamal Cozier handed Stabroek Ballers the initial advantage, only for Seon Garnett to equalise three minutes later.
Garnett then pushed Ballerz Empire into the lead as he scored in the 11th minute to seal his brace. He would then make his presence felt once more in the 15th minute to complete his hat-trick and increase Ballerz Empire’s lead at 3-1.
However, four unanswered goals from Stabroek Ballers sealed the come-from-behind result. Cozier, who was the architect of the comeback win, reduced the deficit to 2-3 in the 17th minute. His hat-trick in the 30th minute then restored parity to proceedings, before a 35th minute to secure his helmet trick pushed his side ahead at 4-3.
The win was then sealed in the 39th minute through a Mark Jhalu strike. The abovementioned winners will contest the final, while the losing semifinalists will compete in the third-place playoff.
The winner of the event will pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third, and fourth-place finishers will walk away with $200,000, $100,000, and $50,000 and the corresponding accolade.
