CWI Rising Stars U-19 Men’s 2-Day
Despite spin ace Golcharran Chulai snapping up a 5-wicket haul on day one of Guyana’s CWI Rising Stars Men’s U-19 2-day encounter against Barbados, the latter went into the close of play the happier of the two sides at the Arnos Vale Ground in St. Vincent and the Grenadines yesterday.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Mavindra Dindyal and his men would have been elated to seemingly have Barbados on the brink of being bowled out at 49/6 in just the 21st over of their innings.
However, some dogged batting from the Barbados lower order saw them clawing their way to 201/9 before declaring late into the last session of the day.
Nathan Sealy, the Bajan captain, rallied with a solid 38 from 87 deliveries, sharing in a 66-run stand with eventual top-scorer Jatario Prescod to take his side beyond 100.
Prescod, in turn, was left unbeaten on 75 (120 balls) in an innings laced with six fours and a six. He ushered Barbados to 200, sharing in stands with Zishan Motara (10), Raneico Smith (5), and last man Kyron King (20 not out, 46 balls).
The last stand between Prescod and King, worth 59, showed that the Guyanese lack the killer instinct and ultimately give Barbados the upper hand by stumps.
Earlier in the Barbados innings, Chulai had wreaked havoc, taking out the Barbados middle order with key wickets of Joshua Dorne (21), Joshua Morris (1), and Akeem McCollin (4), while Isai Thorne accounted for the top three batsmen.
Chulai came back at the end to claim two more scalps, returning figures of 5-51 (20 overs), while Thorne snared 3-48 (13 overs).
After Barbados’ declaration, the Guyanese batsmen had 18 overs to face, and as has been the norm in the previous two games, they promptly folded, wilting to 62/5 by the time the umpires removed the bails to signal the end of the day’s play.
Guyana’s top three batsmen all went for ducks as Raneico Smith and King struck early. Smith had opener Rampersaud Ramnauth out caught while Guyanese skipper Dindyal chipped back to Smith without troubling the Scorers.
Meanwhile, King accounted for Romeo Deonarine to leave Guyana reeling at 3-3 in the third over. Smith bowled Sachin Balgobin with King having Jonathan Van Lange caught for just 3 with Guyana in serious trouble at 31/5 in the 11th over.
However, some solid counterattacking batting from Thaddeus Lovell, the only Guyanese who has done anything of substance with the bat in the competition thus far, carried the Guyanese to the end of the day without further loss of wickets.
He had with him wicketkeeper batsman Shahid Viera (20 not out, 44 balls). When play resumes today, Lovell is on a run-a-ball 24 (4sx1, 6sx3), and the Guyanese will be hoping that the pair can take them close to Barbados 1st innings total.
