-GPS Head advises prison officers

Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot has advised Prisons Officers at the Camp Street location to always maintain the highest standard of respect and professional conduct as it involves taking care of offenders who have been deprived of their liberty and as a result may be mentally disturbed.

A release yesterday  from the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) said that Elliot made the call on Thursday during his quarterly muster and general inspection of officers.

The Prison Head also reminded the officers to ensure the safe custody and rehabilitation of prisoners.

“Treat prisoners humanely as per the International Protocols and standards you have signed to. Reforming these individuals to become productive and law-abiding citizens is no mean task. Also bear in mind that the Prison Service thrives on discipline and also upholds the ideals of vigilance, humanity, fortitude and integrity. These principles must always guide you throughout your career if you want to succeed further,” Elliott stressed.

His remarks came a day after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar Ali-Hack SC and a team of state counsel  visited the Camp Street prison “to have an understanding on how the mentally challenged inmates are managed and cared for at the facility”.

Elliot along with Dr. Meena Rajkumar, facilitated the visit. A separate release said that Elliot briefed the team on the general treatment of inmates and how welfare matters are being addressed.

Dr. Rajkumar gave a briefing on how mentally challenged inmates are assessed and the level of intervention to ensure that inmates receive the necessary care and treatment.

The release said that the DPP  took the opportunity to interact with prisoners to have an understanding about their cases.
