Corentyne man to spend 40 months in jail over armed robberies

A Rose Hall Town, Corentyne man was yesterday sentenced to 70 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery under arms.

Leon Scott also known as `Sausage’, 28, labourer of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne Berbice and Roopchand Thomas also known as `Lilshawn’, 19, unemployed of Lot 60 Rose Hall Town, Corentyne yesterday appeared at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rabindranuth Singh where they were charged with Robbery Under Arms committed on Ricky Gwendasammy and Sachin Griffith which occurred on July, 8, at Portuguese Quarter, Corentyne.

The Administration of Justice Act was applied and Scott pleaded guilty to both charges. On the count of Robbery Under Arms committed on Gwendasammy he was sentenced to 40 months in prison, and 30 months in prison for Robbery Under Arms committed on Sachin Griffith.

The sentences will run concurrently.

The charges were then read to Thomas who pleaded not guilty to both and was remanded to prison.

He will return to the Whim Magistrate’s Court on August 18.

Separately, Dinesh Lakeram, 30, a labourer of Lot 50 Number 68 Village Corentyne, was yesterday also charged with Robbery Under Arms.

He is accused of robbing Shree Ram Chandrapersaud which occurred on 31 May, 2024 at Number 79 Kingston, Corriverton, Berbice.

Lakeram appeared at the Albion Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy, where the indictable charge was read to him and he was not required to plead.

As such, bail was refused and he was remanded to prison. He will return to court on July 25.
