Shawn Harry appeared on Monday before acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with armed robbery and sentenced to three years imprisonment.
It was alleged that on July 10, at Plum Park, Sophia, Georgetown, Harry whilst in the company of another, jointly robbed Joshua Babb at gunpoint.
The prosecutor objected to bail.
The court heard that on the day in question at about 22.30 hours, the victim, Joshua Babb, was operating his taxi when he was dispatched to D’Urban Street to pick up the two accused and two other persons – a man and a woman.
The woman was dropped off at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, and the man requested to be dropped off at Mercy Wing Road Plum Park, South Sophia. Babb drove to the location as instructed and on arrival the man exited the vehicle while the two accused began attacking Babb with a firearm, hitting him several times on his right eye causing injuries. They then ran away.
An arrest was made after Babb, who was in the vicinity of Sussex and Lyng streets, Charlestown, when he noticed Harry entering a Superbet, made a report at the Brickdam police station.
In court, the victim told the magistrate that he fears for his and family’s life and safety.
The magistrate then sentenced Harry to three years’ imprisonment and an arrest warrant was issued for the other accused.
