Dear Editor,
Re MP Jermain Figueira’s letter regarding the lack of agricultural investments in Linden, Region 10, it is essential to highlight the substantial efforts and resources that the Ministry of Agriculture has dedicated to this area. Contrary to his assertions, the current administration has made significant strides in bolstering agricultural development in Region 10.
Since taking office, the Minister and Ministry of Agriculture has prioritized enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability in Region 10. Notably, in the past three years alone, over GYD $500 million has been invested in various agricultural projects within the region. These investments include the establishment of modern farming infrastructure, the introduction of advanced agricultural technologies, and extensive training programs for local farmers.
One of the standout projects is the rehabilitation and expansion of the Ebini Agricultural Station, which has received over GYD $150 million. This facility now serves as a research and training hub, providing local farmers with access to improved crop varieties and livestock breeds. Additionally, the introduction of solar-powered irrigation systems has been a game-changer for many small-scale farmers, ensuring year-round water supply and enhancing crop yields.
Furthermore, the Ministry has distributed over 10,000 high-quality seedlings and 5,000 livestock to farmers in the region, representing an investment of approximately GYD $50 million. These efforts aim to diversify agricultural production, reduce dependency on traditional crops, and increase food security in Linden and its surrounding communities.
It is important to contrast these recent initiatives with the period from 2015 to 2020 when the APNU/AFC coalition was in power. During that time, Linden saw minimal agricultural development, with investments in the sector being sporadic and insufficient to drive meaningful growth. The lack of comprehensive support during those years resulted in stagnation, leaving many farmers struggling to sustain their livelihoods.
The current administration’s commitment to Region 10 is evident through its sustained and targeted investment in agriculture. These efforts not only address the immediate needs of local farmers but also lay the groundwork for long-term agricultural prosperity. The Ministry of Agriculture remains dedicated to transforming Linden into a thriving agricultural hub, ensuring that the region contributes significantly to Guyana’s overall food production and economic growth.
Sincerely
Fawaz Harry
