Pan American Youth Chess Championships
When action continued in the Pan American Youth Chess Championships yesterday at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando, Florida, USA, Team Guyana’s Aditi Joshi and Maliha Rajkumar recorded wins in their respective age categories while the rest suffered mixed results.
After five rounds, Joshi who had 2.5 points from five rounds, improved her record in the Girls U14 category with a draw and a win in rounds 6 and 7.
In round 6, she drew with Mexico’s Angelica Ordonez to take half of a point before taking the win over USA’s Tanya Prabhu to take her points tally to 4 from 7 rounds.
Rajkumar meanwhile, contesting the Girls U16 category, dispatched Jamaica’s Robyn Thomas in round 6 and then drew her round 7 match against Aruba’s Brooke Lockhart to take her tally to 2.5 points from 7 rounds.
Cole who had an inauspicious start to his tournament in the U12 Open with just a win and a draw from six matches, gained a point by virtue of a bye in round 7, his tally is now 2.5 from 7 rounds.
While he did not manage any wins in rounds 6 and 7, Kyle Couchman (U16 open) had two draws taking .5 points from each contest to improve his tally to 3.5 from 7 rounds. Couchman drew against USA’s Ryan Min and Peruvian Pedro Diaz.
On the other hand, it was a tough outing in rounds 6 and 7 for Sachin Pitamber (U14 Open), Kataleya Sam (U12 Girls), Vir Narine (U10 Open) and Saura Ruplall (U10 Girls) who all conceded defeats to their respective opponents.
The Championship is organized by Confederation of Chess for the Americas and International Chess Federation (FIDE) and will conclude today with the final rounds being played at the same venue.
