A New Amsterdam man was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison after he opted to plead guilty at the High Court in Berbice to abducting and assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Junior Fortune also known as “Outlaw”, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam was charged with the kidnapping of Onicia Crawford in December 2022. He was also accused of assaulting the woman with intent to cause grievous bodily harm or to maim, disfigure or disable her on December 27, 2022.

Fortune opted to enter a guilty plea at the High Court in Berbice and Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall sentenced the man to 10 years for the assault and five for the abduction.

Based on information gathered, Crawford was assaulted then locked up and left in her Angoy’s Avenue house in an unconscious state.

The court heard that Crawford had ended the relationship with Fortune who she had taken out a restraining order against. However, he had breached the order and received a four-month sentence before the attack.

Based on information gathered, Crawford was at a friend’s house on December 27, 2022, when Fortune showed up and kicked down the door while armed with a knife and then abducted the woman.

After the incident, the woman was hospitalized for several weeks.
