After rain put paid to the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) U-17 50-Over Inter-County over the last week, they have opted for trial matches between selected players.

The first of those trial matches got underway yesterday with Afraz Budhoo’s XI taking on Parmeshwar Ram’s XI at the Meten-Meer-Zorg Community Centre ground, West Coast Demerara.

Batting first, Budhoo’s XI got to 170/8 from their allotted 50 overs, with the pugnacious left-handed Adrian Hetmyer stroking a classy 61 before retiring out to give others a chance at batting. Among others to get starts as well were Deonarine Dindyal (23), Romario Ramdeholl (21) and Gobin Persaud (21). Bowling for Ram’s XI, Jayden Dowlin snared 2-25 from his 7 overs.

In response, Ram’s XI stuttered to 97/8 (43 overs), with only Marcel Nandu and Ram getting any sort of runs. Nandu played a marathon 23 from 100 balls, while Ram got 21 off of 41 deliveries.

Among the wickets for Budhoo’s XI were Navendra Sankar, who took two wickets, while Dave Mohabir, Darwin Joseph, Budhoo, and Ramdeholl all took a wicket apiece.

The trial matches will afford the selectors the chance to pick the best possible squad to represent Guyana at the upcoming CWI Rising Stars U-17 tournament. The next trial match is slated for today, provided there is no rain.
