Drayton wins FIDE Centenary Blitz Chess tournament

-Enoe captures Rapid title

FIDE Master (FM) Anthony Drayton emerged victorious, capturing the Open Blitz title at the recently held Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Rapid and Blitz tournament at School of the Nations.

On Saturday last, the GCF, in collaboration with the Gambit Group, hosted over 50 players at a special chess event to mark the celebration of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) centenary anniversary.

The GCF’s Rapid and Blitz tournament was also a part of the official attempt for FIDE to gain entry into the Guinness World Records for the most chess games played in 24 hours. That attempt was successful with FIDE members amassing 5.4 million games played in 24 hours on that day.

The tournament saw new talents from St. Joseph High

16-year-old Micaiah Enoe won the Rapid tournament and was also judged the best U16 player.

School, Bishops’ High, Dolphin Secondary, and St. Winifred Schools along with a number of dormant players coming out to participate in the challenge. 

While Drayton was King of the Open Blitz tournament, Keron Sandiford had to settle for second place with Rai Sharma in third position.

Over on the Rapid tournament, 16-year-old Micaiah Enoe captured the overall title and also walked away with the under-16 award.

Prince Dunn took second place while Alek Ubaldo Singh was third, also taking the U12 and U14 awards.

On the other hand, ten-year-old Javier Davenand copped the Best Under-10 player award.
