CWI Men’s Super50 Cricket

Guyana shook off the dust from their disappointing 2-day campaign to begin the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars U-19 Men’s Super50 on a positive note with a 13-run victory over Jamaica at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines yesterday.

After Jamaica won the toss and sent them in to bat, the Guyanese openers bucked the trend of losing early wickets as they had done during the 2-day competition and put together 56 for the first wicket.

Rampertab Ramnauth hogged the strike and got to a well-played 45 from 55 deliveries, which included five fours, before he was out caught to leave Guyana 56/1 in the 15th over. His partner Romeo Deonarine would be run out two overs later for a lethargic six from 42 balls.

Deonarine’s demise triggered an all too familiar collapse from the Guyanese batsmen, with only skipper Dindyal making 19 (33 balls, 4sx1) in an effort to halt the steady fall of wickets.

By the time Dindyal had fallen with the score at 117/5, he had given his side a shot at a decent score, stitching together a fighting partnership with the reliable lower-order batter, Thaddeus Lovell (23 from 27 balls, 4sx1, 6sx2), who had gotten out himself an over earlier.

Riyad Latiff played a valuable unbeaten knock of 25 (41 balls, 4sx1) while Isai Thorne, better known for his bowling, crafted a defiant 21 (34 balls, 4sx1, 6sx2) to help usher Guyana to 175 all out from 49.5 overs.

Bowling for the Jamaicans, Odel Samuels snared a miserly 4-19 from 10 overs and received valuable support from Tamarie Redwood (3-31).

With runs on the board, the Guyanese bowlers fought tooth and nail in defence of their total, with the skipper, Dindyal, running through the Jamaicans with his part-time off-break.

Isai Thorne struck early, removing opener Matthew Morgan (6) with Jamaica on 17, but the latter’s partner Adrian Weir battled on doggedly sharing in mini-partnerships with Jordan Johnson (12) and Steve Wedderburn (8) to push Jamaica into ascension.

At 93/3 in the 19th over, Jamaica looked solid in their pursuit of 176 for victory, but Dindyal had other ideas, bringing himself on and finding success, as he had Weir caught by Lovell for a 48-ball 35 (4sx3, 6sx1).

From 93/4 in the 20th over, the Jamaicans collapsed spectacularly despite skipper Brian Barnes (59 from 68 balls, 4sx2, 6sx2) trying to drag his team over the line. By the time Golcharran Chulai removed Barnes with the score at 157/8, Dindyal had already accounted for three more Jamaican scalps.

He clinched his 5-fer with the wicket of Jevone Wynter next while Chulai bowled Odel Samuels to seal the victory by 13 runs, giving Guyana a successful start to their Super50 campaign.

Dindyal ended with figures of 5-24 from 9 overs, with Chulai (2-29) and Thorne (2-39) playing supporting roles in a winning effort. The Guyanese will take on the Leeward Islands today at the Park Hill Playing Field.

Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) defeated the Leeward Islands by 31 runs. In pursuit of T&T’s total of 108 from 39.4 overs, the Leeward Islands were bundled out for 77 in 29.4 overs.

Over at the Park Hill venue, wet conditions forced a no-contest between the Windward Islands and Barbados. Barbados were 72/2 in 10.1 overs in pursuit of the Windward Islands total of 192 all out in 44.4 overs before the rain intervened.

The tournament continues on Wednesday when Leewards face Guyana at Park Hill, T&T meet Barbados at Arnos Vale, and Windwards play Jamaica at Cumberland.
