Ramjattan calls for immediate retirement of Hicken

Former Leader of the Alliance for Change (AFC) Khemraj Ramjattan has called for the immediate retirement of acting Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken.

Ramjattan, a former Minister of Public Security,  made the call at the AFC weekly press conference yesterday. Ramjattan’s demand follows numerous allegations of corruption within the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and Hicken’s surpassing of the retirement age.

President Irfaan Ali had previously extended Hicken’s tenure, which had officially ended on July 22, 2023. According to a statement from President Ali, “I’ve already issued a letter extending the services of the Commissioner of Police,” with no specific end date for the extension.

In light of the extension and ongoing controversies, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) recently  voiced its deep concern over the revelations of corruption and financial mismanagement within the Guyana Police Force (GPF). The GCCI has called for an independent investigation into these allegations, condemning the situation as “repugnant” and urging that the police force be held to a higher standard of accountability.

The GCCI warned that failure to address these issues may lead to a further erosion of trust and stability in law enforcement.

The call for action follows several high-profile incidents, including a Region 10 Constable caught with 21 pounds of marijuana. There have also been allegations involving Assistant Police Commissioner Calvin Brutus.

Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn addressed the allegations against Brutus on July 12, stating that the Special Organised Crime Unit is conducting an investigation. Brutus has proceeded on leave to facilitate this probe, with no promotions to be considered until the investigation’s conclusion. Benn emphasized the need for thoroughness and integrity in these proceedings.

In an address at the GPF’s 158th Anniversary Symposium on July 16,  Benn urged police officers to reflect on their conduct and avoid extortion and bribery. He criticized those in authority who flaunt wealth, suggesting that such behaviour undermines the integrity of the police force.
