Some compelling reasons the ruling party should consider to call elections in 2024

Dear Editor,

In light of the ruling party’s prevailing confidence, I wish to present a strategic rationale for why it may be advantageous for the ruling party of Guyana to consider holding elections in 2024 instead of waiting until 2025.

Firstly, an earlier election could capitalize on the current momentum. If the government has successfully implemented popular policies or achieved significant milestones, an early election would allow it to benefit from these recent accomplishments. Delaying the election could result in these achievements fading from public memory or being overshadowed by unforeseen challenges.

Secondly, an early election might catch the opposition unprepared. By surprising the opposition with a shorter timeline, the ruling party could potentially outmaneuver them, limiting their time to mobilize and campaign effectively. This tactical advantage could be crucial in securing a victory.

Moreover, the economic landscape could play a significant role. If economic indicators in 2024 are favourable—such as low unemployment, stable inflation, and robust growth—the ruling party could leverage this positive environment to garner voter support. Conversely, waiting until 2025 introduces the risk of economic downturns or crises that could erode public confidence.

Finally, addressing public sentiment sooner rather than later can demonstrate responsiveness and adaptability. If there are pressing issues or widespread calls for change, an early election can show that the government is listening and willing to act promptly, potentially bolstering its standing with the electorate.

In conclusion, while the decision to hold early elections involves numerous factors, there are compelling reasons for the ruling party to consider the benefits of a 2024 election. By doing so, they might strengthen their position and secure a mandate to continue their work for the nation.

Sincerely,

Keith Bernard
