All-round performance powers Guyana to victory over Trinidad

CWI Men’s U-19 Super50 Cricket

Spurred on by good performances with bat and ball, Guyana made it three wins out of as many games with a comfortable 89-run win over Trinidad and Tobago in round three of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars Men’s U-19 Super50 competition.

Playing at the Cumberland Play Field in Cumberland, St. Vincent, Mavendra Dindyal called the toss correctly, and the Guyanese skipper elected to bat.

Openers Rampertab Ramnauth and Romeo Deonarine gave them a solid start, stitching together an 85-run opening stand, their highest of the tournament thus far. However, Deonarine was first to go, caught off the bowling of Aneal Rooplall for 30 (72 balls, 4sx1) in the 26th over.

Dindyal then joined Ramnauth, and they formed another valuable partnership, with the latter getting to a well-deserved half-century. By the time Ramnauth was bowled by Faeez Ali in the 35th over, he had scored 65 from 107 balls decorated with seven fours.

Dindyal too would notch up a fifty of his own, getting 51 from 64 balls, stroking four fours in the process to help push his side to a competitive total.

The Guyanese skipper would be the anchor through the middle phase of the innings, sharing small but impactful partnerships with Jonathan Van Lange (13) and Thaddeus Lovell (25 from 21 balls). By the time Dindyal was dismissed by Andrew Rambaran with the score at 212 in the 48th over, he had done his part.

The Guyanese tailenders threw their bats at anything and helped their side to 223/8 from their allotted 50 overs. Rambarran and Ali were the leaders of the Trinidadian bowling attack, snaring 3-46 and 3-48, respectively.

Set 224 for victory, the Trinidadians looked to be cruising at 89/2 in the 26th over with their top order all getting starts, but the fall of Kyle Ramdeo (22) who was looking good sparked a collapse of epic proportions as the last seven wickets folded for the addition of just 45 runs with the Trinidadians bowled out for 134 in 42.5 overs.

Krsna Singh was the man largely responsible for triggering that collapse, taking three of the first four wickets to fall. In fact, it was Singh who had dismissed Ramdeo as he was by Lovell, adding to his scalps of Luke Ali (14) and opener Justin Jagessar (27).

With Singh already denting the batting line-up with his three wickets, Van Lange and Golcharran Chulai then turned in devastating spells to skittle out the Trinidad side.

Chulai accounted for Joshua Davis (5) and Ali (13) while Van Lange cleaned up the rest.

In the 39th over, Van Lange trapped T&T skipper Orlando James Leg before Wicket (LBW) first ball of the over before comprehensively bowling Rambaran off the fifth delivery of the same over. Next, he picked off Kevin Kanhai (1) and ended the match with the wicket of Rooplall (1).

Van Lange finished with stellar returns of 4-8 from 3.5 overs, while Singh took 3-31 (10 overs), and Chulai had 2-16 from his 8 overs.

Dindyal and his men will now turn their attention to tomorrow’s fixture against Barbados, which is slated for Arnos Vale.
