The defending Elite League champion, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), was eliminated from the CFU Club Shield as they went down 2-6 to Grenadian outfit Grenades yesterday in the preliminary round at the Rignaal Jean Francisca Stadium, Curacao.
GDF’s starting XI comprised Jumaine Cumberbatch, Simeon Moore, Cedric Osborne, Ryan Hackett, Chris Macey, Abumchi Benjamin, Kelsey Benjamin, Stephon McDonald, Ian Dooker, Amos Ramsay, and Colin Nelson.
After taking the initial lead in the form of Kelsey Benjamin in the 20th, GDF would concede in the 35th minute via a Sherman Augustin strike to enter the halftime interval at 1-1.
The Guyanese then conceded four consecutive goals in the space of 15 minutes in the second period to trail 5-1, which effectively ended the contest. Renay Serrano, Malcolm Stewart, Luis Labrada, and Rakeem Henry scored in the 64th, 71st, 74th, and 79th minutes, respectively.
Although Shamar Scott was able to reduce the deficit for Guyana in the 82nd minute, the Grenadians completed the result in the 90th+5 minute.
