Thirty-six-year-old Quacy Jamal Craig, who was wanted by the police over the murder of Dexter Horsham in 2023 at West Ruimveldt, was apprehended on Friday following a lively police chase.
Horsham, a 43-year-old construction worker was fatally shot on the afternoon of August 10, 2023 while a taxi driver sustained a gunshot wound following a confrontation over a property at West Ruimveldt.
According to the police, ranks on mobile patrol intercepted a black Toyota Allion car, PAC 9713, near the Pegasus Hotel on Seawall Road, Kingston, Georgetown. The vehicle was being driven by Craig. One of the patrol ranks, a sergeant, informed Craig that he was wanted for questioning in relation to the murder of Horsham and arrested him.
Police searched the car, but nothing of evidential value was found. Craig was then instructed by the sergeant to drive the car, with his reputed wife and another rank inside, to the Ruimveldt Police Station. Two other ranks followed behind on motorcycle.
However, on arrival in front of the Ruimveldt Police Station, Craig made a sudden left turn and drove off at a fast rate into Yarrow Dam, causing the ranks on motorcycle to give chase.
According to the police, Craig drove to a point where the vehicle could not go further, exited, and began to run. He scaled several fences, and although he was called upon several times by the pursuing ranks to stop, he continued running, and eventually jumped into a nearby trench.
One of the ranks, who was armed with a service pistol, discharged one round at Craig, hitting him on his buttocks. He was subsequently apprehended and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted under police guard.
On August 10th, 2023, several men were involved in the confrontation over a property at Hibiscus Street, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown which resulted in the death of Horsham.
Anthony La Rose, 34, called ‘Roodhoo’, a father of two, of Lot 280 Kuru Kururu, Linden- Soesdyke Highway, had appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on August 17, 2023, before acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus where he was charged with the murder of Horsham.
The court heard that on the day in question, La Rose, along with several other accomplices went to West Ruimveldt to evict someone from a property he claimed belonged to his grandparents. However, he encountered resistance from the occupants of the house as well as persons in the neighbourhood which resulted in a verbal and physical confrontation.
It was at this point that one of the accomplices who was armed with a handgun shot Horsham, as well as at other persons who were trying to make peace. The accused who was armed with a cutlass, allegedly dealt Horsham a chop to his body after he was shot.
A subsequent investigation led to the arrest of the accused.
