GDF says taking `swift, decisive’ actions on ganja busts

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) yesterday said that it is taking “swift” and “decisive” actions in relation to two recent marijuana busts that have involved its soldiers.

In a statement yesterday, the GDF confirmed the police arrest of two of its ranks for possession of a large quantity of marijuana.

The GDF said that on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at approximately 21:30 hours, Corporal Edward Mc Calmont and Lance Corporal John Johnson were apprehended in a Route 42 minibus bearing registration number BTT 27 and driven by Corporal Me Calmont with approximately 300lbs of marijuana in several black plastic bags.

Both ranks remain in custody.

“The GDF continues to cooperate fully with the GPF on such intelligence-led operations and maintains a zero-tolerance policy for illegal activities by its ranks.

“The GDF is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and discipline and these recent incidents do not reflect the Values and Standards of the Force. The GDF is taking swift and decisive action to address these breaches and to prevent future occurrences”, the release said.

A similar incident occurred on July 18th.
