A 31-year-old self-employed resident of Buxton, East Coast Demerara died yesterday afternoon at the Georgetown Public Hospital after he lost control of his vehicle while on the public road at Montrose, East Coast Demerara.
The dead motorist has been identified as Akeem Lewis.
The accident involved motorcar, PAF 9125, driven by Lewis and minibus, BAH 1874, driven by a 57-year-old of Airy Hall, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
Inquiries revealed that at about 9.57 yesterday morning, Lewis was proceeding west on the Montrose public road at a fast rate when he lost control and collided with the rear of the minibus, which was proceeding in the same direction.
CCTV footage seen by Stabroek News showed that after the collision, the car crashed into the fence of one of the Apex Education buildings, and turned over, coming to a rest with the back tyres elevated on part of the fence.
Lewis was transported by ambulance to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was admitted suffering from multiple injuries. He succumbed to his injuries at about 3.05 yesterday afternoon.
According to his relatives, Lewis was on his way to the Enmore bus park where he vends when he got into the accident. Lewis’s brother, Lynden Phillips, told Stabroek News that he was working at Timehri, and when he arrived back at Base Camp Ayanganna, Georgetown, he received a call about his brother’s accident. He immediately rushed to the GPH emergency department where he spoke to him, however later in the afternoon while at home, he received a call about his sudden death. Phillips said that all he knows is that his brother was on his way to his place of business located at the bus park when he ended up in the accident.
Lewis sold beverages and chips at the Enmore bus park. He also worked as a part-time taxi driver. He resided with his girlfriend on the Buxton Railway Embankment and has left to mourn a five-year-old daughter.
