The police yesterday said that they intercepted three men on two motorbikes transporting 55.5 lbs of ganja and one was held after a chase.

At about 1 am on Monday, the police said that two ranks were on mobile patrol duties in the vicinity of the Wismar Bridge in Linden. They saw three males on two unmarked XR motorcycles heading west on the Wismar Bridge.

The patrol ranks brought the police vehicle to a halt in an attempt to stop the motorists, but on seeing the police, the two motorcycles suddenly stopped.

The three men jumped off the motorcycles and threw two large, bulky plastic bags over the bridge and into the river.

The men then fled but the ranks managed to apprehend one of the three whose name they later learnt was Keron Layne, a 23-year-old unemployed resident of One Mile Extension, Wismar.

Police retrieved the two bulky plastic bags from the river. When opened in the presence of  Layne, they were found to contain a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.

Police took possession of the suspected cannabis, arrested Layne and escorted him to the Wismar Police Station along with the suspected cannabis, which was weighed in his presence and amounted to 55.556 lbs.

Layne was placed in custody pending charges.
