On an ‘off day’ from the ‘sit down’ sessions comprising the Forty-Seventh Session of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government Conference, Guyana’s President, Irfaan Ali, reportedly assigned some of his time to, among other things, reportedly reviewing the use to which Grenada was putting a number of Green/Shade houses valued at US$12,000 donated to the country by Guyana earlier this year.
A report in the publication Now Grenada states that the Guyanese President is backing a three-year Youth in Agriculture programme being implemented by the Grenadian government through its Ministry of Agriculture that “will help expose young people to the entire food production system.” Guyana is currently providing support to several countries in the Caribbean, including Grenada, that are seeking to restore their food security bona fides following the decimation of their agriculture sectors by Hurricane Beryl.
“We want to congratulate Grenada on the tremendous work that you are doing in relation to, first of all, getting the youth excited about food production, as these facilities are not just about agriculture but about the entire food production system, being an important part in the logistics of operations of hotels, resorts, that surround here,” the Guyanese President is quoted as saying during a visit to a site that houses one of 2 green/shade houses.
As the destruction of Hurricane Beryl became clear, President Ali had delegated Prime Minister Brigadier (retd) Mark Phillips to lead Guyana’s response effort to the devastation visited upon other CARICOM member countries to coordinate a public/private sector undertaking to assist Grenada, and St Vincent and the Grenadines in their post-hurricane recovery effort.
