Two vital road arteries into Lethem are in a particularly terrible condition

Dear Editor,

This letter serves to bring attention to two roads that serve as vital road arteries into the Town of Lethem; one road is from the Pork Bridge Housing Scheme to Lethem and the other connects the villages of Nappi, Parishara and Hiawa to Lethem. Both of these roads are in a particularly terrible condition and a source of much inconvenience for road users including motorcyclists, minibus and truck owners and passengers, many of whom have to use these roads daily. Huge craters and potholes and water pools of slush and mud have resulted in trucks and minibuses and other vehicles getting stuck daily. This in turn is further driving up the cost of living as vehicle owners now have to expend more on repairs and maintenance, and farmers bringing their produce to market have to sell at higher prices to compensate for rise in freight prices.

The fact of the matter is that the two above-mentioned roads have not been well maintained and inexplicably have been left to deteriorate. And due to their proximity to Lethem which is the central economic hub of the region, one would have thought, logically, that having proper roads leading into the town would have been a priority for the government. Overall it is a bad look for the Regional Administration and the Mayor and Lethem Town Council and clearly exemplifies the current way of thinking of the region’s authorities; prone to inertia, failure to react proactively, and severely lacking in initiative. I am asking His Excellency the President to look into this matter as it seems that only through his direct intervention that things get done in Guyana and perhaps he can also read the riot act to his regional functionaries as well. We are now an oil producing country and better must be had.

Sincerely,
