The large hole that was dug at Avenue of the Republic and Brickdam, George-town, by a Guyana Water Inc (GWI) crew to repair a water main, resulted in frayed nerves and traffic at the intersection snarled in all directions.

It prompted the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to issue an advisory to motorists to utilise alternate routes and practice effective management to arrive for appointments or business engagements on time.

The GPF notice stated, “Without prior notice, a large hole was dug at Avenue of the Republic and Brickdam, which poses a significant challenge to traffic flowing in all directions. This requires road users to be alert to the likelihood of congestion and demands consideration for pedestrians and motorists. You are advised that while there will be inconvenience, other routes should be utilised, and effective management practiced to arrive for appointments or business engagements. The traffic department continues to work in favour of the public with your continued cooperation expected.”

GWI workers effecting repairs on the main

GWI Operations Supervisor, Aubrey Miller, told the Stabroek News that works had commenced on Friday night at the aforementioned intersection in order to fix a water main. He explained that the main is an aging pipe and because of the increased vibration caused by traffic overhead, especially from trucks, it eventually began to leak.

He disclosed that the traffic in the area on Friday night posed some challenges for the GWI workers when they started fixing the leak, but they resumed work yesterday, and were working to reinforce the main pipe with fibreglass. He explained that the fibreglass will stabilise the main and help it to withstand the heavy vibrations.

As of yesterday, around 15:36 hours, Miller reported that the workers had completed repairing one joint and were working on the other joint. He estimated that the fibreglass would completely dry today by 10.00 hours, which would allow GWI to hand the site over to the Ministry of Public Works at about midday to have the road resurfaced.
