US-based Guyanese held with illicit gun

Ganesh Rampersaud, called ‘Shami’, a 52-year-old US-based Guyanese who is on vacation and staying at No. 58 Village Corentyne, Berbice, was arrested at around 9 pm on Friday after he was found to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm along with ten live matching rounds of ammunition.

Police in Regional Division #6, acting on information received, went to Rampersaud’s home in No.58 Village, Corentyne. A release from the police said that on arrival at the premises, the ranks contacted Rampersaud, identified themselves, and executed a search warrant. He was told of the information received that he had in his possession a firearm and ammunition without a license.

Rampersaud told the ranks that he is a US citizen and had travelled from the United States of America on 27th July 2024.

The ranks then requested to search his person and home. As a result, Rampersaud said: “I’m here on vacation, and I have a firearm to protect myself; I want to be honest. Let me show you.”

He then proceeded to a bedroom, where he had his personal belongings and took out a black handgun with a magazine and ten live rounds of ammunition.

He handed over the firearm to the Police and was told of the offence committed, arrested, cautioned and escorted to the Springlands Police Station, along with the firearm and ammunition.
