Defending Champion Eccles All Stars eliminated

Kares ‘One Guyana’ T10 Tapeball

A new champion will be crowned in the Kares ‘One Guyana’ T10 Tapeball Championship, as defending champion Eccles All Stars were sent packing following a round of 16 defeat to dark-horses Tarmac Titans yesterday.

Facing the Tarmac Titans at Lusignan Community Centre on the East Coast of Demerara, Eccles came out second best, which was unquestionably the biggest upset of the day.

Daniel Ross, eventual man of the match, turned in a brilliant individual all-round performance to help the Tarmac Titans to victory.

While Eccles batted first and were held to 98/7 from their allotted 10 overs, Ross led the admirable bowling effort, picking up 3-22 (2 overs) before returning with the bat to see his side complete a successful run chase ending on 101/6 (10 overs), winning by three wickets.

During their innings, Eccles found it hard to get going with only Quazim Yusuf getting a start with 29 from 17 balls before he was bowled by Ross.

In response, the Tarmac Titans found themselves in a spot of bother at 96/6 with just two balls remaining and three runs needed for victory.

Ross, who had been at the crease for eight deliveries and had nine runs, was at the non-strikers end with tailender Jayadev Mana facing the penultimate ball of the 10th over.

Mana managed to scamper through for a single to put Ross on strike with nine runs needed from the last ball; however, Ross held his nerve and spanked the ball away for four to spark jubilant celebrations from his team as they sealed progression to the quarterfinals of the competition. In another highly anticipated contest that turned out to be a last ball game as well, the Village Rams lost to newcomers, the Montra Jaguars, who won by five wickets.

In that game also played at Lusignan, the Rams batted first and got to 102/7 from their 10 overs as Jonathan Van Lange top scored with 22.

In reply, the Jaguars were on 101/5, needing 2 for the win; however, Devendra Latchman held his nerve to stroke a four, taking his team to safety and the quarterfinals.

In other results, the Titans All Stars, Diamond Gunners, Brooklyn Youth Strikers, The Guards, Mahdia Movements, and Team Corruption also booked quarterfinal spots.

The competition continues on Sunday, August 11, with matches slated for the Enmore Community Centre on the East Coast of Demerara.
