No hearing in election case as magistrate unwell

The hearing of the March 2020 elections fraud trial was yesterday postponed as presiding Magistrate Leron Daly was ill, court officials informed this newspaper.

Officials indicated that the matter is set to resume tomorrow.

On July 31, 2024, State Prosecutor Darshan Ramdhani KC raised concerns about Magistrate Daly’s decisions and her note-taking during the first two days of the trial. Consequently, the trial was adjourned to yesterday to allow the defence time to respond to these submissions.

The defendants in the case include former Chief Election Officer Keith Lowen-field, former District Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo, former Deputy Chief Election Officer Roxanne Myers, Volda Lawrence, Sheffern February, Denise Bobb-Cummings, Michelle Miller, Enrique Livan and Carol Smith-Joseph.

The charges, initially read to the defendants in June 2021, allege that between March 2, 2020, and August 2, 2020, they conspired to defraud the voters of Guyana by falsifying the vote count for the general election held on March 2, 2020.
