Contractors are working around the clock to complete rehabilitation works as soon as possible on the Coldingen bridge, East Coast Demerara, according to Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill.
Edghill told Stabroek News yesterday that the bridge had suffered some damage and noted that following the East Coast Road expansion project, it will undergo a major upgrade.
“Just like what would have happened with the other bridges on the railway embankment – the Acrow panel bridges. We have had some damage because of the constant use. This bridge is to be replaced based upon the East Coast Road expansion project, so we are doing the remedial work on the Acrow panel bridge until we get to the full construction of the new bridge.”
It has been two days since contractors began rehabilitation works on the Coldingen bridge and many commuters have been inconvenienced.
The Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Public Works on Sunday advised road users along the East Coast Demerara corridor that emergency work was underway on the bridge at Coldingen (Railway Embankment) owing to issues with its structural capacity to facilitate traffic.
According to a release, traffic proceeding east on the Railway Embankment can detour through Bladen Hall to gain access to the East Coast public road. Traffic proceeding west will utilise the East Coast public road onwards and can divert at Annandale or other villages to access the embankment if necessary.
